Migrations to America from many parts of Britain, particularly to the province of North Carolina, from the Highlands and i[s]les of Scotland, have, of late, become very frequent and numerous, and likely to continue [s]o. Whatever this may be owing to, the matter is ferious, and, to [s]ome, the con[s]equences arey very alarming. The natives of the Highlands and i[s]les have always been remarkable for the [s]tronge[s]t attachment to the place of their nativity, and for the highe[s]t re[s]pect towards their ma[s]ters and [s]uperiors. ... In a word, let the Higlanders only compare the [s]ituation of the country they now live in, to the country of which I have given them but a rude and imperfect draught ... .

Memoirs of Gen. William T. Sherman
by William T. Sherman
Rousseau's brigade moved in splendid order steadily to the front, sweeping every thing before it, and at 4 P.M. we stood upon the ground of our original front line; and the enemy was in full retreat. I directed my several brigades to resume at once their original camps.
Several times during the battle, cartridges gave out; but General Grant had thoughtfully kept a supply coming from the rear. When I appealed to regiments to stand fast, although out of cartridges, I did so because, to retire a regiment for any cause, has a bad effect on others. I commend the Fortieth Illnois and [the] Thirteenth Missouri for thus holding their ground under heavy fire, although their cartridge-boxes were empty.
I am ordered by General Grant to give personal credit where I think it is due, and censure where I think it merited. I concede that General McCook's splendid division from Kentucky drove back the enemy along the ... .

Redcoats on the Cape Fear
by Robert M Dunkerly
In 1763 Americans were among the most properous people on earth. They were proud to be part of a growing British Empire that guaranteed their safety, preserved their rights, and expanded their trade networks. Within ten years it had all changed. Disagreements over taxes, colonial rights, trade regulations, and other issues caused deep dividision between England and the colonies.
Britain won the French and Indian War that year (known in Europe as the Seven Year's War) by not only harnessing its military might, but also spending at a tremendous rate. The English defeated the French in Canada once and for all, ending nearly a century of warfare in America between the two world powers.
... As taxes were at the root of the crisis with England that led to Revolution, they deserve further examination here.
We hope this short narrative will want you to learn the rest of the story.

Narrative Of Military Operations
by Joseph E. Johnston
This book was directed to be written and published during the Late War Between the States by Joseph E. Johnston, General, C.S.A. . In his introduction Gen. Johnston writes: "I offer these pages as my contribution of materials for the use of the future historian of the War between the States."
The passage of [the secession] ordinance, in secret session on the 17th of April, was not known in Washington, where as Quartermaster-General ... I was then stationed, until the 19th.
Accordingly, the resignation of my commission, written on Saturday, was offered to the Secretary of War on Monday morning. ... [My resignation] was accepted immediately.
No other officer of the United States Army of equal rank, that of brigadier-general, relinqueshed his position in it to join the Southern Confederacy.
... [my assignment was] to the command of Harper's Ferry.

Only seventeen days after the fall of Charleston, a regiment [of British soldiers] destined for the defence of that town, and on its way thither, was met, forty miles below Charlotte, at Waxhaw Creek, and cut to pieces by Colonel Tarleton. On the 20th of June, the battle of Ramsour's Mill was fought between the Whigs and Tories, in which the patroits gained an important victory, though their enemies had the advantage of the ground and out-numbered them three or four to one.
July 12th, a detachment of British and Tories were attacked at Williamson's planatation and completely routed. ... on the 6th, was fought the battle at Hanging Rock, where the British were roughly handled, ... On the 16th, Gates was defeated near Cambden, and his army cut and dispersed. September 26th, the British army, under Lord Cornwallis, entered Charlotte, where they met with a warm reception, and were greatly harassed by the Whigs ... . October 7th, the decisive battle at King's Mountain was fought, which closed the campaign for the year, and compelled Cornwallis to retreat, with all possible expedition, into South Carolina ... .

A History of the Campaigns of 1780 and 1781
by Lieutenant-Colonel Tarleton
The action commenced by a cannonade, which la[s]ted about twenty minutes, when the enemy advanced in three columns; the He[ss]ians on the right, the guards in the center, and Lieutenant-colonel Web[s]ter brigade on the left. The whole moved through the old fields to attack the North-Carolina brigades, who waited the attack until the enemy got within one hundred and forty yards, when part of them began to fire, but a con[s]iderable part left the ground without firing at all. The general and field officers did all they could to induce the men to [s]tand their ground; but neither the advantages of the po[s]ition, nor any other con[s]ideration, could induce they to [s]tay. General Stephens, and General Law[s]on, and the filed officers of tho[s]e brigades, were more [s]ucce[ss]ful in their exertions. The Virginia militia gave the enemy a warm reception, and kept up a heavy fire for a long time, ... In a word, the engagement was long and [s]evere ... .
